My Journey with Calibrate: Mette
Calibrate member Mette shares how small changes in her life have added up to a new day-to-day.
My Weight Loss Journey
My weight issues really took off two years ago, when I started a new job that had me sitting and working 12-16 hours a day. Before I knew it I was big. When I was younger, after I delivered my babies, I was able to exercise and get my weight down. But now that I was in my late forties, I really struggled.
I tried everything—Weight Watchers, cabbage soup, and even keto. And what I quickly noticed was that the “hurry up and lose a few pounds” mentality didn’t work—I’d gain it back, and by then whatever program I was doing was over. During this time, I was sent to the hospital with a blood pressure emergency; my reading was 200/110. I was going to turn 49, and I knew I didn’t want to get to 50 with my health the way it was.
How I Found Calibrate
I first learned about Calibrate through an article in Forbes in July 2020. It highlighted the founder. She talked about how her mom struggled to lose weight, and that story felt really relatable. I come from a medical family, and the way the article described the science and how the program uses a doctor and a coach made a lot of sense. The more I learned, the more boxes got checked, so I signed up.
Before my first coach appointment, I was pretty nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. It’s funny to look back on because now, it’s one of the best parts of my week. I’m a voracious reader, so I really look forward to the new content and then getting to talk about that and my goal with my coach. As for the medication, after researching it, it was actually something I was excited to start. I take it every Saturday morning and don’t even think about it after.
My Results So Far
I’m now six months in, and I can honestly say that I’ve never experienced a program like this. It feels like something has changed in my brain. Before, I would eat cake for breakfast. But I just don't have those cravings anymore. And when I’ve had something too sweet, it really doesn’t taste good. We have candy in the office and I can look at it and say, “mmmm, no.” As a result, I don’t have those afternoon crashes, and then I go home and I sleep well.
More importantly, my blood pressure is now 119/80. Even with medication, it’s never been that low. As for my weight, when I started Calibrate, I weighed 183 pounds, and this morning I'm at 155. I took a picture of myself on my birthday in July and one the other day, and you can see the difference. My BMI went from high to average. It really feels like I’ve extended my life by making these new changes.
But the biggest success for me is that because the changes are small and realistic, I know I can sustain them. Rather than going to the gym and being exhausted, I can walk after lunch, which is something I can actually maintain over time. That means that as the weeks go on, my thought pattern is less “this is what I’m supposed to do” and more “oh, this is how life is now and these are the choices I make.” I think differently, and as a result I’ve been able to make tiny changes that have somehow added up to a new way of life.
It’s funny because as much as people want to say that weight doesn't matter, it does, and I feel so much more confident now. I actually have a post-it note on my computer where I’ve written down some of the most important things I’ve learned through the program. And every time I read it I feel so proud of myself that at my age I can make so many big changes. I was really at the crossroads when I started Calibrate, and now I’m not just buying clothes in smaller sizes, I’m also looking to the future and feeling like I have a long life ahead.
